Is the brightest galaxy in a cluster an extreme example of the sample of cluster galaxies all formed from the same set of processes, or does it belong to a special class of objects formed as a result of an evolution scheme that is completely different from the others? We address this question, using the statistics of extreme values, from the distribution of luminosities, colours and sizes of the few brightest galaxies in clusters found in the SDSS DR4 survey.
