Phased Array Feed Systems

By forming multiple instantaneous "beams" on the sky, phased-array feed systems mounted on parabolic relfectors offer the possibility of imaging very large fields of view.  The Phased-Array Demonstrator System (PHAD) show below at the prime focus of the 10-meter Mark II CART antenna at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory consists of 212 Vivaldi antenna elements designed to operate at 1 - 2 GHz frequency.  A set of 84 outputs (42 polarization pairs) is transmitted from the feed for digitization and off-line processing and beam forming.  A test image of a geostationary satellite is shown at right.
